The Journal Club presentation was held on 31st January 2025, at the Seminar Hall, on the topic “Battling Blue”. The resource person, Ms. Raheena K.A., delivered a comprehensive presentation on the topic, covering aspects such as,the sources of blue light emission (digital devices, LED lighting, etc.),the effects of blue light on the human eye and sleep patterns, Strategies for reducing exposure to blue light (blue light filtering glasses, apps, etc.). The presentation was followed by a lively discussion, where participants shared their experiences and insights on the topic. The meeting concluded with a formal ceremony, where Dr. Dilip C, Principal, issued a certificate of appreciation to the resource person, Ms. Raheena K.A., in recognition of her informative and engaging presentation. The Journal Club meeting provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and discussion, and we look forward to future events.

On 8th November, Mr. Shafin led a compelling Journal Club session on gender-related social issues, titled “The Rainbow Propaganda: Unraveling a Social Enigma.” His well-prepared presentation explored the societal perceptions and biases surrounding gender, highlighting their impact on inclusivity and identity. Through key references and an engaging discussion, Mr. Shafin encouraged participants to reflect on evolving views of gender. The session was thought-provoking and offered meaningful insights on fostering a more inclusive Perspective.

Mr. Shafin led a session on “The Rainbow Paradox: A Social Perspective,” examining the societal and scientific implications of inclusivity for the LGBTQIA+ community. He discussed how changes in social acceptance can create both positive and negative outcomes. The presentation included discussions of scientific articles that explored these themes, along with an examination of Superdrags and their influence on public perception and media representation of LGBTQIA+ individuals. On July 22, 2024, Mrs. Raihan A Abdu, Assistant Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, presented on “The Impact of Workouts on Physical Health and Well-being.” She discussed various workouts, their health benefits, and how regular exercise improves cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and mental well-being. Mrs. Raihan shared tips for incorporating exercise into daily routines, highlighted 10 simple exercises, and emphasized the importance of a balanced diet in achieving overall fitness, drawing from her own fitness experiences.

Journal Club at Al Shifa College of Pharmacy hosted “Aroma Alchemy: Scented Tales of Desire,” led by Dr. Sruthi H. Participants explored perfume families, debunked gender-specific scent myths, and learned about fragrance application. Dr. Sruthi emphasized the psychological impact of scents, their connection to memory, and the therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy. The session ended with a meditation using aroma candles. Dr. Sruthi was honored with a certificate, and the club members thanked all participants.

Educating success: Integrating WHO life Skills

The Journal Club at Al Shifa College of Pharmacy held an engaging session, “Educating for Success: Integrating WHO Life Skills,” on May 28, 2024. Led by Vice Principal Prof. Junise V, the event covered essential life skills like self-awareness, critical thinking, and effective communication. The Secret Routes of Migratory Birds

The Secret Routes of Migratory Birds” Journal Club on April 24, 2024, at Al Shifa College of Pharmacy, featured a presentation by Dr. Prasanth SS on bird migration and its ecological importance. The session, introduced by Vice Principal Mr. Junise V, included discussions on conservation efforts, including the “Lights Out, Texas!” campaign. An interactive bird quiz was held, with winners receiving bird atlases. The event concluded with certificate presentations and light refreshments, fostering further discussion.

Canine companion: Pawsitively Unforgettable

The “Canine Companion: Pawsitively Unforgettable” Journal Club at Al Shifa College of Pharmacy on January 30, 2024, explored the profound human-canine bond. Dr. S Vimal Kumar’s keynote emphasized the therapeutic benefits of pets, drawing parallels with the Hachikō Statue’s symbolism of loyalty. The event featured active discussions, highlighting how pets foster responsibility, empathy, and unconditional love. Participants left with a deeper appreciation for the significant role pets play in enriching human lives.

Dr. Pallavi P, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, delved into the nuances of Indian cuisine during her journal club presentation titled “A culinary journey through India’s famous foods”. She spoke in length about the Indian Cuisine heritage, its rich flavours and unique spices, the different types of Indian regional cuisine and its diverse regional specialties.

Wheelie

The Journal Club of Al Shifa College of Pharmacy organized a talk on Motorcycling, aptly named “Wheelie” by Mr Sujith Unnikrishnan, Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Al Shifa College of Pharmacy. Mr Sujith explain various interesting facts about motorcycling, including seating postures, safety precautions and riding gears. His lucid style of presentation evoked interest in the audience about this not-so-commonly discussed topic.

Al Shifa College of Pharmacy hosted an engaging presentation, ‘Romancing Indian Railways,’ by Mr. Binai K Sankar, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacy Practice, on July 12, 2023. The event, organized by the college Journal Club, explored the unique hobby of railfanning, offering insights into the historical and cultural significance of Indian Railways. Mr. Sankar’s captivating anecdotes and visuals brought to life the passion associated with observing and documenting trains.

SOGIE

A talk on Sexual orientation, Gender identity, and Expression (SOGIE) was organised by Al Shifa College of Pharmacy on April 28, 2023. The talk was delivered by Prof Junise V, Vice Principal, Al Shifa College of Pharmacy. The talk was attended by all the teaching faculties of the college, who found the presentation incredible and thought provoking. Prof. Junise V delved deep into the various aspects of sexual orientation and gender identity, and how they affect individuals’ lives. Prof. Junise V also discussed the challenges faced by individuals who identify as LGBTQIA+ in our society, and the importance of creating safe spaces and promoting inclusivity. The presentation highlighted the need for greater understanding and acceptance of people with different sexual orientations and gender identities.

On February 23, 2023, Al Shifa College of Pharmacy hosted a Journal Club presentation by Neethu Varghese, Associate Professor in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, titled “CARE FULL.” Addressing challenges faced by seniors living alone, Mrs Neethu highlighted the transformative impact of smart home devices and healthcare technologies. The discussion covered solutions like PILL PEZ for accurate medication dispensing, Bluetooth trackers for belongings, fall detectors, CAM My Eye for the visually impaired, DEXCOM CGM for real-time glucose monitoring, and LIBERTY LIFT for assisted mobility. Attendees actively engaged in discussions, recognizing the potential of these innovations to enhance seniors’ safety, independence, and overall well-being. The session underscored the College’s commitment to holistic education and community welfare.
